Honor 5A launched in China

The Honor 5A was launched today in Beijing, China. It comes in as a successor to last year's youth oriented budget smartphone from Honor, the Honor 4A.

Amongst the key specfications of the Honor 5A includes the following:
  • 5.5-inch, HD (720p) Fully Laminated Screen
  • 64-bit octa-core processor
  • 2GB RAM with 16GB ROM
  • 13MP back camera and 8MP front camera
  • 3100mAh battery
  • Various colour options
  • VoLTE

The Honor 5A is equipped with a choice of 2 processor depending on variant, both 64-bit octa-core processors, which are the Kirin 620 (same as last year's Honor 4C/4X), or the Snapdragon 617. It comes standard with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (which is expandable via a dedicated Micro SD slot up to 128GB).

It comes with Backside Illuminated (BSI) sensors on both front and back camera modules, on the back is a 13MP unit with F2.0 aperture, 28 mm equivalent five elements lens, blue glass infrared filter, and an somewhat impressive 7 cm close-up focusing. On the front, there's a 8MP camera, also with F2.0 aperture, 27mm equivalent four elements lens and blue glass infrared filter.

Moving on to the screen, the Honor 5A is equipped with a 5.5-inch, OGS fully laminated IPS screen in HD (1280x720) resolution. Despite having a somewhat low 267 ppi, it has a high body-to-screen ratio of 74.5%. It also boasts a high 178° viewing angle as well as 1000:1 contrast ratio. Keeping the lights on is a battery rated at 3100 mAh.

As the Honor 5A is a budget oriented device, naturally, it does not comes with some of the other fancier features of the other Honor devices, there's no fingerprint sensor, and also it does not come with a metal build, instead, it's all plastic here, with what seemed like swappable rear covers that comes in various colours and 2 different types of textures, pretty much befitting the youthful crowd that might want to customise their phones with different colours to suit different moods. One notable inclusion that did not get removed despite the budget nature of the phone, is that it still comes equipped with VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which is a nice touch.

Here's a quick recap of the known specs
Prices start from ¥699 (~USD106/MYR435) up to ¥799 (~USD120/MYR499) depending on variant.

(According to my sources, the Honor 5A would also be made available for sale in Malaysia in the coming future, notably the model equipped with the Kirin 620 processor, with pricing estimated to be around RM599 inclusive of GST. In other words, it is basically a rehash of the Honor 4X with more internal storage as well as a different look.)
